I
gained a place at Liverpool College of Art (now the John Moores University)
in July of 1975 and received tuition from some of the finest modern figurative
painters in the north of England. The incisive airbrush work of Sam Walsh
(Sam tutored John Lennon in the 1960s and shared a house with The
Beatles in Gambier Terrace) and the broader Hopperesque style of Maurice
Cockerill were a major formative influence.
Over
the years I have drawn inspiration from a variety of subjects and themes -
Dance; Film and Media; Folk Music; Pop and Rock Music - and some years ago
I decided to return to the subject of my home town of Liverpool - The Beatles.
I have always felt elavated and inspired by their music - and in the case
of Harisson and Lennon - their spiritual and philosophical outlook. Turning
to the subject of the Beatles seemed to be a perfectly natural development
for an artist with the same origins"

Use of photographic reference:
I
use photographs as a point of departure for a painting - I try to achieve
a great likeness of the person while evoking the essential spirit and essence
of the subject.
My more contemporary
work is inspired by some of the greats of modern art such as Paul Klee, Kandinsky
and Andy Wharhol. In these paintings I have attempted to use more expressive
colour and move beyond the more traditional boundaries of portraiture.
The original
works displayed are for sale. All of the artwork is available as a strictly
